Uttarakhand โ A Year-Round Destination
Uttarakhand offers something for every season. From snow-capped winters in Auli to monsoon greenery in the Valley of Flowers, each month brings a different character to Devbhoomi. Understanding the seasonal patterns helps you plan the perfect trip.
March to May โ Spring Season
Weather: 15ยฐC to 30ยฐC in valleys, 5ยฐC to 15ยฐC in hills. Clear skies, blooming rhododendrons.
Best for: Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Nainital, Ranikhet, Almora
Highlight: Rhododendron blooms paint the hillsides red in March-April. The Char Dham portals open in late April or early May. This is the start of peak tourist season.
Road conditions: Excellent. All routes open after winter closures. Ideal driving weather.
Crowd level: Moderate in March, high in April-May especially around Char Dham opening.
June to August โ Monsoon Season
Weather: 20ยฐC to 35ยฐC in valleys, heavy rainfall. Hills are cool but wet.
Best for: Valley of Flowers (opens mid-July), Rishikesh (rafting season), Dehradun local exploration
Avoid: High altitude routes to Kedarnath, Badrinath and Yamunotri โ landslide risk. Mussoorie gets extremely crowded and foggy.
Road conditions: Challenging. Landslides common on mountain routes. Travel with experienced drivers who know the terrain.
Crowd level: High in Mussoorie (summer holidays), low everywhere else.
September to November โ Autumn Season
Weather: 10ยฐC to 25ยฐC. Clear skies, post-monsoon freshness. Best visibility for Himalayan views.
Best for: Char Dham Yatra (final months before closure), Chopta-Tungnath trek, Auli, Binsar, Mukteshwar
Highlight: October is arguably the best month to visit Uttarakhand. The monsoon has washed everything clean, the skies are crystal clear, and the crowds have thinned significantly. Dussehra and Diwali festivals add cultural richness.
Road conditions: Good to excellent. Some high passes may close by late November.
Crowd level: Moderate. Much less crowded than summer months. Best value for money.
December to February โ Winter Season
Weather: 0ยฐC to 15ยฐC in hills, 5ยฐC to 20ยฐC in valleys. Snowfall above 2,000 metres.

Road conditions: Variable. High altitude routes to Kedarnath, Badrinath closed. Lower hill stations accessible. Carry chains for vehicles above 2,000 metres.
