Two Sacred Cities, One Day
Rishikesh and Haridwar are just 46 km and 54 km from Dehradun respectively, and only 20 km apart from each other. This makes a combined day trip to both cities one of the most popular outings from Dehradun — covering yoga, adventure, spirituality and the unforgettable Ganga Aarti in a single day.
Recommended Itinerary
7:00 AM — Depart Dehradun. Early start to maximise your time.
8:15 AM — Arrive Rishikesh. Start with a walk across Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula. The morning light on the Ganges is spectacular.
9:30 AM — Visit the Beatles Ashram (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ashram). Entry fee ₹150. The graffiti-covered meditation cells are fascinating.
11:00 AM — Breakfast at one of Rishikesh's famous cafes. Chotiwala Restaurant and Little Buddha Cafe are popular family choices.
12:00 PM — Optional: white water rafting at Shivpuri (1.5 hours, ₹500-1,500 per person). Or continue exploring Triveni Ghat and the temples.
1:30 PM — Depart for Haridwar (20 km, 30 minutes).
2:00 PM — Lunch in Haridwar. The local street food — kachoris, jalebis, aloo puri — is legendary.
3:00 PM — Visit Mansa Devi Temple via ropeway. Stunning views of Haridwar from the top.
4:30 PM — Visit Chandi Devi Temple (optional, another ropeway ride).
6:00 PM — Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri. This is the highlight — arrive 30 minutes early to get a good seat on the ghats.
7:30 PM — Depart for Dehradun. Arrive by 9 PM.

Tips for the Day Trip
The evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri starts at different times depending on the season — roughly 6 PM in winter and 7 PM in summer. Plan your Haridwar visit to arrive at least an hour before.
Carry a small bag only. Leave heavy luggage in the car — your driver will keep the vehicle secure while you explore on foot.
Photography is allowed at most ghats but be respectful of devotees during the aarti.
